What happened to me when I didn't let myself process

June 13, 2018

You know all those quotes that talk about forgetting the past? I just simply don't believe in that approach. Yes, it's the easiest approach in the short term, but it has major consequences.

I came down with severe physical health problems due to the fact that when things came up in my life, I kept going forward instead of stopping and processing. I ended up with severe allergies, a very weak immune system, and I was as skinny as a string bean (95 lbs to be exact).

Thankfully, I'm not there now. I now have a new motto:

"Your past does not determine who you are. Your past prepares you for who you are to become." -Joel Osteen.

In order to get to where you want to be, you have to be willing to process through the most difficult parts of your life.

There are two approaches:

1. Forget the past (insert painful experiences here) and move on. This approach seems better on the surface because the amount of pain induced is not as great all at once. A side effect of this approach is you become calloused. And if you added up the level of discomfort caused by this approach over a short period of time, it ends up being much more painful than taking the time to process.

2. Make time for yourself to process your past. It's okay to grieve. Let the tears roll. It doesn't make you a weaker person, it actually makes you stronger. You can only let go after you've let yourself grieve. You might think you've let go, you might think you're on the other side (I did, I thought so). But until you take time to process things, your past is stuck inside of you as a weight that is making you heavy.

Take time today!

I would love to hear from you!
