Navigating through life as an empath

I am extremely aware of people’s energy. Throughout my life, this "being sensitive" has manifested in different ways. When I was younger, I would stay up cleaning the house just to enter in to the joy in my mom’s surprised and happy face even if just for a fleeting two minutes. I did whatever it would take to cheer up the people who came into my life, to create positive energy around me. (Obviously, I was not always successful). The problem was, I didn’t understand boundaries. I ended up taking on too many burdens from other people, not realizing how to disconnect from their burdens that they brought to me.

I honestly think that most humans can tell when someone is an empath. Maybe not at a conscious level, but since I can remember, I’ve had strangers walk up to me while in the store, sitting on the plane, in passing at one place or another, and tell me their life’s story. They would ask my advice about the most personal areas of their lives. Now, I see this as a great honor. Before learning about boundaries, it meant sometimes it felt like I was carrying the weight of the world. I had all this weight from so many people and I didn’t understand how to set it down.

I have met some amazing healers who have taught me ways to put healthy boundaries in place and not to carry other’s burdens with me. They've taught me how to separate my energy from the energy of others. Now, these are all techniques that I help other empaths within my coaching sessions. These simple techniques have changed my life. I’d like to share a few with you today. I am not sharing from a place of an expert, rather someone who does not have everything figured out, walking beside you, sharing what others have shared with me.

Be aware of how other people are affecting you. If I’m at a party or somewhere with lots of people for multiple hours, I will periodically find somewhere alone to go so that I can ground myself, find my energy again, and then go back with everyone, being conscious to not lose my energy to the energies around me. If you walk into a room with a bunch of people and all of a sudden feel a certain emotion, be aware that this emotion most likely is not coming from you, you are entering into the energy field of a whole room of people and if you are sensitive, you will pick up on how other people are feeling.

Make time for yourself. This is such an obvious one, yet it’s so easy for us to not make it a priority. I make time for myself through carving out time in my schedule to have an Epsom salt bath, do meditations, going on walks in nature, listening to podcasts, & playing music by myself.

Understand what your body is trying to tell you. Every time someone tells me something extremely negative, I feel a knot form in my stomach. This is my body’s way of telling me the energy in the story that they told me has affected me in some way. I have to make sure to take time to process that feeling within the next few hours. (The sooner the better). This sounds so elemetary but SO MANY TIMES in my life I don't make time to do this. If I neglect it, this energy will end up building and will result into one of the three: me getting sick/canker sores/bad headache/not being able to knock this sad feeling. Everyone is different in the way that they deal with stress/negative energy, and everybody’s body is going to have a slightly different reaction. My advice to you is to learn to be aware of what your body is telling you in these moments. It’s leaving behind clues for you to process, clear and let go.

I truly love helping people to learn to navigate through the world being an empath. I have different meditations and processes that share in my coaching sessions, processes that I have learned from other healers and have changed my life. If you know of someone who could benefit from this, please pass this on, thanks for reading!
